a5c7b9f00b The story takes place in the world of Remnant, which is filled with supernatural forces and shadowy creatures knownthe Grimm. Prior to the events of the series, mankind waged a battle of survival against the Grimm before discovering the power of a mysterious element called Dust, which allowed them to fight back against the monsters. In the present day, Dust is used to power magical abilities and weapons. Those who use these abilities to battle the Grimm are knownHuntsmen and Huntresses. The series focuses on four girls, each with her own unique weapon and powers. Together, they form a team at Beacon Academy in the city of Vale, where they are trained to become Huntresses. Team RWBY trains to fight crime and monsters knownthe Grimm. Together they will protect the world of Remnant. DISCLAIMER: I am a fan of Roosterteeth's other works and weekly content, so I'm not unbiased. For the purposes of this review, I'll try to be.

VISUAL/ARTISTIC STYLE: 6 out of 10 With a nod to the compressed production schedule that drove some of the visual choices, the season mostly delivered on presentation. The world is bright and colorful, creating an almost surrealistic look for the world. The choice to have non-important bystanders be shadowed out, was a clever work around to prevent the production being bogged down with animating unneeded background characters.

The story often fails at being immersive because there are no shadows or shading (the colors arebright at nightthey are in midday). Comparing the drawn characters to the flashy CGI effects used in battle scenes will highlight the problem.

The anime-esque style is simplistic but never wows the viewer. Likewise the backgrounds and scenery is downright poor; being an afterthought or there was simply not enough time to flesh it out and give it character.

SOUND: 10 out of 10 The musical soundtrack is at a level one would not expect from web- generated content. The soundtrack is clearly professional and would not be unwelcome in any level of production. Sound effects, were also spot on and never jarring.

PLOT: 3 out of 10 With nearly 2/3 of the season being wasted on Weiss Schnee's snootiness and Jaune Arc's lack of confidence; the season squandered the chance to make a great impact with it's premier season. The need to waste episodes on such simplistic character flaws; really took away from any sense of epic or adventure. The sense of what was going on behind the scenes was intriguing, but the amount of time spent on that was maybe 3 minutes out of the whole season. The one saving grace is that they did make good use of the checkered past of Blake, making some use of the "bad girl gone good" motif on more than on occasion.

ACTING: 7 out of 10 I could be a lot nicer, given that almost the entire cast has little to no voice acting experience. Professor Ozpin, Glynda Goodwich, and Blake's voices stood outvery well matched to the character's. They lost a chance to pay homage to Roman Torchwick's inspiration (two staff members with British accents, hint hint) and the character didn't sound very menacing. Lastly, much of the female cast (admittedly playing overly energetic teen girls) were overly "chirpy" at times. They rarely left high pitches and if you were not watching the screen, it would be hard to tell them apart at times.

TRAILERS: 10 out of 10 Special note to the 4 trailers that led up to release. Light on story, but heavy with action they were interesting tales in themselves and a fun watch on their own.

CONCLUSION: If I were not familiar with the previous work of the Production team, I would not rate this so high. What they did accomplish with this Season, was a fantastic groundwork to build upon. They have shadowy villains, mysterious allies, and a world very different from our own that they have barely begun to explore and depict. If the proceeding seasons can leave the "after school special" stories about friendship and getting along behind, this series has a lot of room to grow into a great heroic epic.

In other words, friendship staying strong through dangers and adventure =Good. Friendship surviving peer pressure and social standing = snore! I am a huge RWBY fan. With the combination of a very original idea, insane but believable fight scenes, and (normally) well-written characters that you either love or love-to-hate, it has the makings for a real hit. At the very least, I fell in love with it. However, there were some stumbles along the way that might turn off potential viewers.

The first - and most obvious - of these stumbles is the animation of the first and (at times) second season. Even the most avid RWBY fan will admit that the first season's animation is problematic. However, this problem is mostly remedied by the second season, and the third season is masterfully made. The fourth and fifth seasons use a different animation engine, which radically improves the overall look of the show while staying true to RWBY's core art style. Beautiful.

Another major stumble is the show's pacing and writing, especially during the fourth and fifth seasons. The one of the reasons behind this particular problem is because Monty Oum, the creator of the show, passed away in the middle of the third season. Without his vision, there are times where the show kind of slumps where it really shouldn't. Monty was also one of the show's primary animators, andhe choreographed many of the fight scenes, they also tended to suffer (although it seems that the creators of RWBY are stepping it up in this regard).

Apparently, many fans out there have problems with the voice acting. However, besides the rare display of Annoying Voice Syndrome and some occasional moments where I wish things were said differently, I've never really had any problems with the voice acting. To each their own, I guess.

Yes, this show has some problems. Yes, it isn't perfect. But you'll almost never find a show that meshes out-of-this-worle action, a compelling story, and feels to boot. IMHO, the show's strengths greatly outshine its weaknesses; without spoiling anything, there's a reason I gave this show a 9 out of 10. Come into this show with an open mind, and your mind will be blown.
